It’s a question many of us have asked over the years and the widespread belief in the curse of Friday 13th may well make it the most superstitious day of the year. But is it just a random date on the calendar that has been highjacked by those claiming to be historians and turned into a supposed day of doom, or is this the unluckiest day of the year? In this video from History Calling, we look at the history of Friday 13th and at modern and historical beliefs about Friday 13th. We’ll investigate its supposed links to Jesus and Judas in the New Testament, its connection to the mischievous Loki from Norse Mythology, what it has to do with the 14th century Knights Templar (made famous by Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code) and how it’s related to a 19th century New York society club, a 1907 book and a famous film franchise. We’ll also look at the older superstitions it is based upon, including the question ‘is the number 13 unlucky’, which has plagued humanity for many years and by the end of the video I’ll have answered the question that many ask, which is ‘should I be worried about Friday 13th?’ Rest assured though that the stories surrounding Friday the thirteenth are neither as old nor as dangerous as you may have been led to believe and as for how unlucky Friday 13th is, I’ll show you some evidence that it might actually be one of the safer days of the year.
