Resentment in the region towards France continues to grow and the chances of that country salvaging its reputation in its former colonies is increasingly unlikely. Faced with a failed counter-terrorism strategy and unequal economic relations based on extractive regimes rooted in the era of colonialism, France has already been forced to withdraw from Mali and now from Burkina Faso. A domino effect seems to be setting in the region, which is fed up with not being able to manage its own monetary policy and with jihadism continuing to advance unchecked.
