| Video Discription | Our practice in Philadelphia rarely starts a patient on Xanax or Alprazolam beyond using for flights or MRIs. Even then, Xanax can have significant and serious adverse effects, and individuals need to thoroughly discuss risks and benefits with their mental health professional, before starting, stopping or changing doses of this medication. Xanax or Alprazolam is rarely prescribed at our office in Philadelphia. It can work incredibly well short-term, but can actually increase someone's anxiety between doses, or increase their risk of panic attacks. Patients will sometimes refer to it as a "ball and chain," feeling that they always need to carry it with them, or know where it is. It works very quickly (but wears off quickly), which can lead to a roller coster of decreased anxiety (with a dose), increased anxiety (As it wears off), decreased anxiety (with the next dose) etc, with patients often taking it 2 or 3 times a day. As mentioned, it can be helpful for some, but it's incredibly important to discuss risks and benefits with a provider, before starting, stopping or changing dose of this medication.
