| Video Discription | Florianópolis is the capital of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, in the southern region of the country. The municipality is made up of the main island, the island of Santa Catarina, the mainland and some surrounding small islands. The city has a population of 500,973 inhabitants, according to estimates for 2019. It is the second most populous municipality in the state (after Joinville) and the 48th in Brazil. Name of the city: The city was originally called Nossa Senhora do Desterro. After the proclamation of the Republic in 1889, Santa Catarina resisted the new government. I wanted to be independent. But the federal troops would not let go and a civil war ensued. The federals' victory took place when Marshal Floriano Peixoto was President of the Republic. Thus, in 1894, Desterro's name was changed to Florianópolis, which means "city of Floriano", in honor of the then Brazilian president during the period of conflict. Considered by many inhabitants and tourists who visit it as having a unique beauty, endowed with strong traces of the Azorean culture, observed in buildings, handicraft, folklore, cuisine and religious traditions, Florianópolis has in its diversified tourism one of its main sources of income.
