In Assam state alone, relentless rains have submerged homes and schools, leaving more than a million people displaced. This week has seen the Brahmaputra River, which runs through the state, break its banks for a third time this year, causing residents who live alongside to move to higher ground. Tens of thousands more people in Sikkim state have been forced from their homes as new rains arrived just two months after the worst flooding in recent years. Indian airforce helicopters have dropped food supplies to villages that have been cut off and thousands of temporary camps have been set up.
