What are a Wife’s Financial Responsibilities?
Well technically according to Shariah, the obligations and responsibility of wife to her husband, her children, or maintaining the household is nothing.
Responsibility of Wife in Islam
Yes, that’s right – nothing! Not even if she is rich or is working.
If the husband is a humble shopkeeper while the wife is a doctor, the husband still has the technical responsibility to support the household on his own.
But the reality is, a successful marriage is not one seen through the narrow lens of contracts and legal rights. In fact, in my experience, spouses who do that, don’t last together for long.
Because in reality, the concept of marriage is as Allah says Surah Al Bakarah verse 187:
“They (your wives) are your garment and you are a garment for them”
This literally means you look out for each other as a couple, cover up each other’s flaws, and fill in the gaps left by the other.
Therefore, it is out of goodwill that a wife supports where it feels appropriate and needed, especially in situations where the husband is going through a difficult time.
When the non-muslims say that women are oppressed in Islam or have no rights; this actually makes me think, do they really know Islam?
Let me share with you my story:
When my husband came to ask for my hand from my family, my mom and brothers asked him, "what does he want in dowry?", you know as dowry is practiced in many parts of the world and his reply was "nothing".
"She can walk out from this house in just the clothes she's wearing and I will provide for her and that is my duty".
Even after the marriage, he's been a provider and the first thing done by him was share his bank account with me and he has never since then questioned when, where and how I've spent the money; not that I've misused.
This support was given by my husband, I've always supported him through all issues in life, this is trust.
Our Prophet, SAW, advised his companion, Aa’ishah May Allah be pleased with her said: “Hind bint ‘Utbah, the wife of Abu Sufyaan, entered upon the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, Abu Sufyaan is a stingy man who does not spend enough on me and my children, except for what I take from his wealth without his knowledge.
Is there any sin on me for doing that?’ The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, ‘Take from his wealth on a reasonable basis, only what is sufficient for you and your children.'
Believe me, this is is a Hadees From Bukhari.
Even when a husband is being a bit difficult, the Prophet advised the wife to be reasonable and to keep “sufficiency” in mind.
Now, again here, the need and want concept applies which I've explained in the earlier video "Financial Responsibility of a Husband."
Let me share some cases with you through my experience where the main income earner of the family is a wife.
I have seen so many cases where the wives who are Doctors, Mashallah, making a good income and their husbands manage their clinics or take up smaller jobs or are not very ambitious as they take care of the family and children.
Is this wrong? Are they not happy?
No, they make wonderful couples, very happy couples. Remember, marriages work on trust and if you have a good and loving partner, do not lose him for the sake of money.
