In time, the shop added hot idlis in response to customer requests, and has since served only the idli and nothing else! The founder, Mr. M K Mahadevan passed on a few years ago, but his legacy continues with his wife, Mrs. Uma Devan and son, Krishnan Mahadevan, who till date make idlis the old-fashioned way, each batch of rice and urad dal batter fermented overnight, before being steamed and served with a spicy chutney that has won numerous fans for Iyer Idly not just in its neighbourhood but across the city. Idli Chutney The idlis are made the traditional way from idli rice and urad dal that is ground to a batter and fermented overnight. The result is an idli that is soft and grainy, slightly pasty and aromatic, with a touch of tartness. It is served with a spicy chutney that some say is more popular than the idli here. This combination though is definitely the sort that makes Iyer Idly a sought after destination for what is perhaps one of Bengaluru’s favourite breakfast dishes.
