He is one of the most respected figures in Islamic history and is known for his strong leadership, wisdom, and contributions to the growth and spread of Islam. Umar was born in approximately 584 CE in Mecca, Arabia, and was from the powerful Quraysh tribe. Before accepting Islam, he was known for his intelligence, courage, and strict adherence to pre-Islamic Arab customs and traditions. In the early days of Islam, Umar was a staunch opponent of Prophet Muhammad and his followers. However, in 616 CE, he converted to Islam after witnessing the steadfastness of his sister and brother-in-law in the face of persecution. His conversion was a significant event in the history of Islam, as Umar's strong personality and leadership skills played a crucial role in the establishment of the Muslim community. As caliph, Umar focused on various aspects of governance and justice, which earned him the title "Al-Farooq," meaning "the one who distinguishes between right and wrong." He implemented various reforms to ensure social justice, introduced financial accountability for the state officials, and established a welfare system to take care of the needy and vulnerable. During his reign, the Islamic empire expanded significantly through a series of successful military campaigns. Territories including Persia (Sassanian Empire) and Byzantine territories (Eastern Roman Empire) were conquered, leading to the expansion of Islamic influence in those regions. Umar was assassinated in 644 CE by a Persian slave named Abu Lulu while leading the congregational prayers in Medina.
