We see it with burn restriction days in the winter, thick smog in the summer and particularly on days when the sky turns alarmingly orange with wildfire smoke. Until recently, most studies examined these different types of pollution separately. Yet, all these different types of pollution can cause serious respiratory, cardiovascular and immune system problems. Now there is new research showing a dramatic increase in the number of days where ozone and particulate matter pollution (wildfire smoke) are combined to create extreme air quality issues. This increase was measured throughout the entire American West but it is especially ****ounced in northern California.
