| Video Discription | A Crystal mother says a school in New Hope didn't do enough to keep her son with special needs out of harms way. The Minnesota Department of Education is now investigating North Education Center for possible neglect. "He needs to be watched at all times." said Yvette Huff-Morris, referring to her son Marlo. "He likes to put things in his mouth and this time around, he ate something that he shouldn't have." Huff-Morris says her son has attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and is nonverbal autistic. In early February, he apparently had eaten styrofoam that came from a bean bag in the classroom. "He came home with styrofoam in his diaper. I was changing him and I kept seeing white speck," Huff-Morris said. Huff-Morris took Marlo to Hennepin County Medical Center to be evaluated. Doctors told her they wanted to admit him into the Intensive Care Unit to cleanse out his system. Besides styrofoam, other non-food items were found in Marlo's digestive tract, Huff-Morris said. "I saw a standard size bolt, some type of black velcro, rubber, and plastic," she said. Dominique Dupri, Marlo's aunt and personal care attendant, believes staff at North Education Center didn't watch him close enough. "The doctor said that if it had been in his system any longer he could have passed away." Shortly after the incident, the Minnesota Department of Education sent a letter to Marlo's family. It read "Marlo Andrews, who is a student at North Education Center, may have been neglected by a school employee or the facility on or around February 5, 2013." "Some people need to get some reprimands in their files, some people at the school need to be fired outright," said Dupri. Marlo's mother said her son won't be going back to North Education Center. Right now he's being taught by a homebound teacher. School officials say they can't comment because of privacy reasons. But they did say the district takes all possible steps to ensure children with special needs are closely supervised.
