Nicknamed ‘Spiderville’, the people of Skuon have been hunting tarantulas in the nearby jungle for generations. The town’s most talented tarantula hunters, some as young as five years old, can dig up to 100 spiders a day from their burrows. They carefully remove the fangs to avoid being on the receiving end of a painful bite. Traditionally the spiders were only used medicinally to help with backache, breathing problems and even as an aphrodisiac. But in the 1970s when the brutal Khmer Rouge regime took control of Cambodia and starvation was a very real threat; people turned to whatever food sources were available. In this case, spiders. Over the years, locals developed a real taste for the eight-legged snack, which can be barbequed on a stick or deep fried in oil. The legs are said to taste like chicken, but novice spider samplers may want to avoid the abdomen, which holds a bitter, brown paste containing a mixture of organs, excrement and sometimes eggs, however true tarantula connoisseurs claim this is the most delicious part.
