What started as a movement for an 'independent' nation, led to the death of hundreds and the suffering of thousands. However, 2021 signalled the end of violence when the remaining insurgents surrendered. Economic growth through startups and focus on sports also brought some hope. However, border towns are still tethered to their past, grappling with crumbling infrastructure in roads, healthcare, water and education. EastMojo's Editor-in-Chief Karma Paljor travelled to Saralpara, a Gorkha village flanked by Adivasi and Bodo communities where locals revealed that the village's sole road hasn't seen repairs for decades due to bureaucratic hurdles and insufficient government funding. The village solely relies on solar power, leading to frequent outages during extreme weather. Its primary school, staffed by just two teachers, serves 80 students, while a lone nurse tends to a population exceeding 12,000 at the health centre. Water scarcity compounds the challenges.
