In 2008, Tata Motors raised 4000 crore rupees through DVR (Differential Voting Rights) shares. DVR shares are similar to normal equity shares, but they have fewer voting rights and slightly higher dividends. However, there was an issue in India as institutional investors wanted more voting rights, and retail investors had little knowledge about DVR shares. Because of this, Tata Motors' DVR shares started trading at a discount of 40-50% compared to normal shares, which usually have a 5% discount. To address this problem, Tata Motors decided to cancel all DVR shares within a year. For every 10 DVR shares, investors will receive 7 regular Tata Motors shares, which means DVR shareholders will get a 20% extra premium.
