This troubleshooting tutorial video will show you how to rev match downshift with a manual transmission car. Some people can be taught rev matching in one step and some others find it difficult to understand and it can be a difficult skill to teach especially if you have minimal time driving standard transmission car.
I have broken down the lesson into two parts. The first is learning the rev match independently of the downshift, then we add the downshift. Then we blend them together to get a fast rev match downshift which once you know how to do, you will use it every time you drive your stick shift.
If you feel you need to know what rpm you need to rev to in order to get a perfect rev match then you are doing it all wrong. You should be able to do this without even looking or needing a tachometer. That is why it is important to understand the hard and fast tap of the gas which is correct vs slow revving up and down to a particular rpm which is wrong. The slow revving is where people get into problems with under revving and over revving. For this exercise If you feel you are looking at your tach too much do yourself a favor and cover it with a piece of paper.
This video may seem repetitive but I just wanted to demonstrate how you do have to practice the steps to make sure
your feet and hands are doing what you want them to do.
Trouble shooting tips:
-Learn this slow and precise so you don't mis shift. Don't try to be a race car driver and do it fast especially if you are just learning how to drive a manual. mis-shifts blow up motors and they are usually because people are trying to shift too fast.
- Learn this using 4-3 not 3-2. 4-3 is a forgiving downshift as the car has momentum where as 3-2 is a lower speed and doesn't always work very well doing quick rev matches at lower speeds. Vs just doing a normal downshift. You may feel it is jerky and question if you are doing it right in 3-2. At end of video there is clip how to do slow rev match into 2nd.
- No one can tell you how hard you need to tap over the internet, that is what the first part of the video will teach you. Every car is different so what may be a hard tap on one car may only need to be 1/2 as hard on another.
- If you find you are not tapping (blipping) hard enough try 2 quick taps. One tap will raise the rpm then the 2nd one will raise it even higher. You can hear a double tap downshift here on every downshift: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ufu8BOnfU4 there is nothing wrong with this but try to avoid this unless you are really having problems.
- the rev match does not have to be perfectly smooth everytime it is normal at low speeds/rpm that you will have some jerky feeling so don't feel like it has to be perfectly smooth everytime or you will get discouraged. Even a slightly under rev match blip is still smoother than no blip at all.
