The festival gets its name from the Sanskrit term "dipavali", meaning "row of lights". Traditionally, people light a row of clay lamps (diyas) during the new moon night outside their houses to invite the presence of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. Diwali is also called the festival of lights because it symbolizes the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and hope over despair. Although Diwali gets celebrated across India, there are different reasons as to why people celebrate the festival of lights with such enthusiasm. Hindus celebrate it as the day when Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, the Rakshasa King of Lanka. Jains celebrate it as the day when Mahavira, their last Tirthankara on earth, attained Nirvana (enlightenment). Sikhs celebrate the festival of Diwali to mark the homecoming of their Guru Har Gobind Ji from the prison of Emperor Jahangir along with numerous Hindu gurus. Diwali festival gets celebrated over five days, where each day has some significance and meaning behind it. 1. The first day of Diwali is called Dhanteras, which indicates the beginning of the new financial year for Hindus. People clean their homes, shop for new clothes, kitchen utensils and gold to help bring good fortune. 2. The second day of Diwali is called Chhoti Diwali. The day is celebrated to remember and honour the triumph of Lord Krishna over the devil king Naraka. People decorate their houses with clay lamps, flower garlands, and draw beautiful rangoli patterns on the floor using coloured powders or sand. 3. The third day is the main Deepavali festival holiday, where families gather together for the Lakshmi Puja, which is then followed by having a mouth-watering feast together. 4. The fourth day of Diwali, known as Govardhan Pooja, is when people present each other with gifts and exchange "Happy Diwali Wishes" for the season. The day marks the celebration of Lord Vishnu's victory over the demon king Bali, as well as Lord Krisha's triumph over God Indra. 5. The fifth and the last day of Diwali is known as Bhai Dooj, a day to celebrate the love and bond between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters invite their brothers over and prepare their beloved sibling's favourite dishes who, in turn, shower their sisters with gifts and blessings. People also celebrate this festival of lights by purchasing and bursting firecrackers. Everything from a crackling phooljhadi to the noisy patakha is fair game. You may often find the sky saturated with colourful rockets. The spectacle may be quite pretty to look at, but bursting these firecrackers is harmful to the environment as well as the people who make them.
