Plus with dividend stocks, the timing of the dividend cheques is relatively predictable. (although the amount per year might change) Pros #2 - Transaction Costs Transaction costs usually happen one time, at the time of purchase, and that's about it. Pros #3 - Chance To Outperform Market If you're picking individual dividend stocks, there's a chance you could outperform the market. Not to mention that most dividend stocks are relatively mature, so not a lot of share price swings. Now the drawbacks of dividend investing is that it just takes more time since you need to do your research, and because dividends would be counted towards your income, you'll have to pay tax on it. Pros And Cons Of Index Fund Investing š Pros #1 - It's Simple Index funds are really simple to understand since you're essentially buying the top companies in a market or everything in the market. Pro #2 - Cheap Access To Massive Amounts Of Diversification Because you're buying everything in the market, suddenly you've gain exposure in multiple industries at once. Pro #3 - Great Performance Over The Long Run As a matter of fact, index funds have out performed the majority of individual investors who are picking stocks into their portfolio. Of course, there are some drawbacks to index funds as well. Management fees are ongoing, returns are usually not realized until you've sold your shares, and if for whatever reason you don't like certain companies in the index, you can't really get rid of it.
