After spending the day at Mount Arafat, the pilgrims headed to a desert plain called Muzdalifa to collect pebbles to use in the ritual in Mina. They must throw 21 pebbles at each of the three 25-meter pillars that represent the devil in a symbolic rejection of temptation.
