By Sabyasachi Chowdhury: Mumbai Indians, on Sunday, March 26, became the champions of the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) after beating Delhi Capitals (DC) by seven wickets at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
DC’s innings can be segregated into two halves – The first 16 overs followed by the last four. In the first 16 overs, the Capitals found themselves in all sorts of strife. Barring Meg Lanning, no other batter looked secured in the middle. Just when Lanning was needed to stay until the end, she got run out after scoring 35 runs off 29 balls with five fours.
Issy Wong started the damage by dismissing Shafali Verma, Alice Capsey and Jemimah Rodrigues in her first two overs. Amelia Kerr was also effective after the leg-spinner finished with impressive figures of 4-0-18-2. Hayley Matthews turned the screws on the DC batters with a masterful spell of 4-2-5-3. The off-spinner also became the leading wicket-taker of the tournament.
When it seemed the DC would be bowled out for an under-par score, Shikha Pandey and Radha Yadav took charge. In the last four overs of their innings, Pandey and Radha added 52 runs for the 10th wicket off 24 balls. Both batters stayed unbeaten on 27.
Radha finished off DC’s innings in style with two sixes in a row off Nat Sciver-Brunt. Wong bowled with a lot of fire in her first three overs before Pandey and Radha took 20 runs off her final over.
MI didn’t have the smoothest start to their run-chase. Radha gave DC their first breakthrough after dismissing Yastika Bhatia, who hit a full toss straight to Alice Capsey at deep mid-wicket. Matthews hit three fours and looked good after which Jess Jonassen accounted for her wicket.
Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals by 7 wickets at Brabourne Stadium.
The Capitals had the upper hand after the power-play as they reduced Mumbai to 26 for two. For MI, the onus was then on Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt to steady the ship for their team. After the first 11 overs, Mumbai stepped on the gas with a flurry of boundaries.
The duo brought up their 50-run partnership off 53 balls. In the last five overs, MI needed 45 runs at a required run rate of nine. DC struck a body blow after Pandey sent back Harmanpreet with a brilliant throw. Harmanpreet scored 37 runs off 39 with Mumbai Indians still some distance away from their maiden WPL title.
Sciver-Brunt brought up her fifty off 52 balls, but MI still needed 17 runs off 11 balls. Amelia Kerr hit Jess Jonassen for a four to bring the target down to 10 off eight balls.
