This event marked the restart of regular flights between Beijing and Havana, aiming to attract more visitors to Cuba and help its struggling tourism sector. Cuba has now eliminated visa requirements for Chinese tourists, a move that started on Friday. Air China used to fly to Cuba through Montreal, but these flights stopped in 2020 due to COVID-19. Before the pandemic, Cuba's tourism industry had 4.2 million visitors in 2019, but this number dropped to about 2.4 million in 2023. The flight's arrival was celebrated by Chinese ambassador to Cuba Ma Hui, Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, and other officials.
