La marihuana, también conocida como cannabis, es una preparación de la planta de Cannabis Sativa, destinada a usos recreativos y medicinales. La marihuana puede ser consumida fumada, inhalada, o mezclada con el alimento. El principal producto químico psicoactivo es el delta-9-tetrahidro-cannabinol, o THC. El preparado de la planta de Cannabis también contiene al menos otros 65 componentes que están químicamente relacionados con el THC, llamados cannabinoides. El THC es químicamente similar a una clase de sustancias que se encuentran de forma natural en nuestro sistema nervioso llamadas endocannabinoides, de las cuales la anandamida es la más conocida hasta el momento. Los endocannabinoides hacen parte de un sistema descubierto recientemente llamado el Sistema endocannabinoide, o SEC.
La comunicación neuronal es esencial para todas las funciones cerebrales. El SEC actúa como un modulador de esta neurotransmisión. Cuando se activa la neurona postsináptica, los endoncannabinoides son producidos, liberados, y viajan DE VUELTA hacia la neurona presináptica donde activan los receptores cannabinoides. El efecto general es una DISMINUCIÓN en la liberación de los neurotransmisores como el GABA o el glutamato.
Ejemplos de las funciones del SEC:
- Modulación del dolor: los cannabinoides SUPRIMEN el procesamiento de la señal de dolor, produciendo efectos de alivio del dolor.
- Reducción del estrés y la ansiedad.
- Regulación del estado de ánimo: el SEC promueve las “buenas sensaciones” induciendo la liberación de dopamina en el sistema de recompensa del cerebro. Esto explica la euforia, o el “subidón”, experimentado por los usuarios de marihuana. El SEC también está involucrado en muchas otras actividades mentales y corporales, incluyendo la memoria y el aprendizaje, el apetito y patrones de sueño, funciones inmunes y fertilidad.
Los endocannabinoides son sustancias de transmisión de corta acción. Se sintetizan a demanda y su señalización termina rápidamente por enzimas específicas. La cantidad de mensajeros endocannabinoides está estrechamente regulada de acuerdo a las necesidades del cuerpo. Los usuarios de marihuana consumen una cantidad mucho más alta de THC. El THC abruma el sistema endocannabinoide, anulando las funciones normales del cerebro. Debido a que los receptores cannabinoides están presentes en muchas partes del cerebro y del cuerpo, los efectos del THC son muy amplios. Evidencia sustancial de estudios en animales indica que la exposición a la marihuana puede causar cambios adversos a largo plazo en el cerebro. Mientras que el uso recreacional de la marihuana es SIN duda perjudicial, la planta de Cannabis puede ser una valiosa fuente de medicamentos. En la actualidad, los dos principales cannabinoides de la planta de marihuana que son de interés médico son el THC y el cannabidiol, o CBD. Estos productos químicos se utilizan para incrementar el apetito y reducir las náuseas en pacientes sometidos a quimioterapia contra el cáncer. También pueden ser útiles en la reducción del dolor y la inflamación, en el control de las convulsiones epilépticas, y posiblemente incluso para tratar enfermedades autoinmunes y cánceres.
