There are reasons to make either choice. Here are some pros and cons for both seedlings and clones:
Clones:
Pro. - easily found and shared between friends and dispensaries.
- always female
- A great way to preserve an outstanding plant or strain.
- takes less time to root and be ready to bloom than a seedling
- A great way to keep a perpetual grow going, with no need to buy more seeds.
- easier to raise with less issues like damp off.
Con. - Expensive to purchase
- High risk of bringing home an insect egg or fungus!
- Much lower yield than a clone
- Plants need supports to not fall over
- Both the plant and roots just don't thrive as well as a seedling
- Less yield than a seedling
- You must have a local source to purchase
- Limited choice of strains
- You'll rarely find clones sold by top breeders, so you'll have no idea of the quality, or if it even is the strain you purchased.
SEEDS
Pro: - Available feminized, guaranteed female
- If male plants are wanted for breeding, regular seeds can be purchased
- Available easily online from distributers and breeders
- Plants from seed thrive more, grow larger (outside) are bigger, and yield up to 3x what a clone does
- can be stored for years and still be viable
- Thousands of strains exist! And almost all are sold as seeds online.
- seedlings product a tap root and strong root system that keep it from blowing over. Less support is needed and the roots grow strong and make it strong.
- If grown indoors in a clean room, no risk of insects and less molds. Peroxide can keep it at bay of things are too wet. No need to bug spray!
- Less risk of fungus gnats or damp off if grown in soil free with peroxide.
Cons - Takes longer to reach vegetative growth than a clone
- Can easily damp off if overwatered
- more delicate to handle seeds
- if using non-feminized, 50% chance of male
- When you order online, cheaper seeds are usually older and less viable. You risk them not germinating at all.
- seeds are delicate and require sterile careful handling.
- Like clones, sellers can lie. I find most of the lies to be local dispensaries. :(
- Conditions must be kept perfect until the plant has its first true leaves.
- regular seeds can be male or female. You can't tell until the male blooms. So get feminized |
