STORYLINE:
Wearing T-shirts emblazoned with marijuana motifs and discreetly handling out samples, around a hundred backers of Thailand's liberalized cannabis laws rallied near Government House in Bangkok on Tuesday to demand the lifting of the fog of uncertainty hanging over the industry.
Thailand made it legal to cultivate and possess marijuana in June.
The move was a key policy of the Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvikul, who saw huge economic potential in the medical marijuana market.
But the vagueness of the law also permitted recreational use of the plant, as long as it was consumed in private.
Since June, cannabis shops have sprung up in many Bangkok neighbourhoods, along with mobile dispensaries and street stalls.
Such brazen displays have upset many conservatives, leading to a call for cannabis to be put back on the narcotics list.
Tuesday's rally brought together cannabis farmers and shop owners who stand to lose out financially, as well as smokers who want to continue to enjoy marijuana without harassment.
They met near Government House because the national Narcotics Board was meeting there to consider the situation.
"The people here which are growers, users, sellers - those that have invested their time, their money and all of this – go and get proper licensing and pay taxes and all of the above, they make sure they do everything by law," said Kitty Chopaka, a longtime advocate and campaigner for the legalization of cannabis.
"If it goes back, then all these guys will just lose out, including myself," she said.
What was needed, she said were clear regulations that made sense.
The Thai Parliament will consider a new bill on the issue on Wednesday.
