| Video Discription | Located in the Hassan district of Karnataka, this 12th-century architectural marvel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a stunning example of Hoysala artistry, renowned for its intricate carvings and sculptures. Originally built to commemorate a pivotal Hoysala victory over the once mighty Cholas, the temple has become a revered pilgrimage site for Hindus, especially devotees of Lord Vishnu. The temple was commissioned by King Vishnuvardhan of the Hoysalas, and took a whopping 103 years to complete! In the 14th century, the Vijayanagar kings further added to the grandeur of the temple. The temple is created using Soapstone, something used in all Hoysala architecture. Soapstone is known to be soft and conducive to fine carvings initially and to get settled and solid like granite with time. Two other exquisite specimens of the Hoysala architecture remain at Hoysaleshwara temple in Halebidu and Channakeshava Temple in Somnathapura.
