Changdeokgung was constructed during the Joseon Dynasty in 1405 as the second royal palace, following Gyeongbokgung. It was used as the main palace for nearly three centuries. The palace is renowned for its harmonious integration with the natural landscape. Unlike other palaces with more rigid layouts, Changdeokgung was designed to embrace the existing topography. It features beautiful gardens, ponds, and pavilions, making it a prime example of Korean palace architecture. The Huwon, or Secret Garden, is an integral part of Changdeokgung. It is a stunning garden where the kings of the Joseon Dynasty could relax in private. The garden includes various pavilions, ponds, and lush greenery. It is considered one of the most well-preserved palace gardens of its kind in South Korea. In 1997, Changdeokgung, along with Changgyeonggung and Jongmyo Shrine, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Historic Areas of Gyeongju."
