An unprecedented natural disaster is being experienced by the southernmost state of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul.
Anomalous downpours and severe floods have already affected 401 out of 497 municipalities. The state government has declared a state of emergency.
Extreme rains, which began on April 22nd, continue to destroy the infrastructure of cities.
At least 95 people have become victims of the climate tragedy, with more than 130 still missing. The number of flood victims approaches 1.5 million people, with over 200 thousand left homeless.
From April 22nd to May 6th, the state of Rio Grande do Sul received as much rainfall as it typically does on average over five months. For example, in the region of Caxias do Sul, approximately 27.32 inches of rainfall was recorded during this 15-day period. According to the National Meteorological Institute, the average total precipitation from January to June here is 27.60 inches.
Relentless rains have destroyed bridges and blocked roads. Several municipalities in the state have been completely isolated. Highways have been closed in several regions. The BR-290 highway section in Eldorado do Sul was washed away by a strong water flow.
The water level in the Taquari River has exceeded approximately 1181.1 inches, the highest level in history.
The rains devastated the municipality of Sinimbu in the Rio Pardo valley. According to the mayor, "The city is completely destroyed. There is no more trade, industry, or jobs, and all public buildings have been damaged."
The situation in Rio Grande do Sul became even more dramatic on May 2nd when one of the main dams in the Caxias do Sul region burst. This exacerbated the already severe flooding in the Taquari River valley. On the same day, Lake Guaíba overflowed in the state capital, Porto Alegre. The water level continued to rise in the following days and surpassed the 5-meter mark for the first time in history.
The runways at Salgado Filho International Airport were submerged, leading to the suspension of all flights indefinitely.
During the flooding, an explosion occurred at a gas station in the northern zone of Porto Alegre, resulting in injuries. The bus station was completely flooded, and all trips to and from the city were canceled.
City residents were forced to seek refuge on the roofs of their homes, on viaducts, and other elevated areas. Entire neighborhoods had to be evacuated. People were wading through approximately 47.24 inches of water, and in some places, the water level reached approximately 39.37 inches of an adult. Municipal security and fire service personnel, civil and federal police, as well as military personnel, were involved in rescue operations.
More than 400,000 people were left without electricity in Porto Alegre and surrounding cities due to power supply disruptions. This was done in flooded areas for safety reasons. Torrential rains and floods not only destroyed vital infrastructure in Rio Grande do Sul but also led to the death of livestock, flooding of agricultural land, and disrupted soybean harvesting.
Weather forecasts are not reassuring: more rain is expected, further exacerbating the situation in flood-affected areas.
In recent years, we have been observing an increase in floods on the planet. Due to the extreme rise in temperatures, vast amounts of water evaporate, resulting in anomalously heavy rains. All of this is just the beginning of a global and catastrophic cycle that our planet will enter by the end of 2024.
What is happening to the planet? What is rapidly heating the waters of the world's oceans? And what danger does climate change pose to each of us? You will find all the answers in the forum "Global Crisis. The Responsibility.” |
