Incomplete bladder emptying is a common problem suffered by men, especially men over the age of 60 years. Physio Michelle from https://www.pelvicexerecises.com.au shows you how to empty your bladder most effectively and overcome common bladder emptying problems including: slow urine flow, incomplete emptying and hesitancy (difficulty starting the flow). Many men don’t seek treatment for bladder emptying problems and sometimes think that it's a normal by product of ageing when in fact this condition can often be treated and resolved.
Some of the main causes of incomplete bladder emptying for men include:
• Enlarged prostate gland with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) - the urine tube passes through the centre of the prostate gland so enlargement slows the flow
• Blockage or obstruction inside the urine tube
• Tight pelvic floor muscles that can’t relax If you have bladder emptying problems see your doctor for assessment. If you can’t empty your bladder go to the nearest hospital for assistance to reduce your risk of bladder overstretching.
Position for Emptying your Bladder
* Sit on the toilet seat
* Rest your hands or forearms on your thighs to support your trunk
* Lean forward to relax your pelvic floor muscles
* Position with your your hips and legs apart
* Sit tall and lengthen your spine
Correct Bladder Emptying Technique
• Empty your bladder when you first feel the urge
• Place you hands under running water to start bladder emptying
• Alternatively lightly tap above your pubic bone
• Bulge your lower abdomen forwards as you start to empty
• Take your time to empty as much urine as possible from your bladder
• Keep your breathing relaxed throughout
• With incomplete emptying try a double void by standing up, walking around and then sit back down and repeat this technique
Diet and Medication to Improve Bladder Emptying
1. Reduce coffee intake - coffee may be related to increased risk of enlarged prostate. Caffeine increases the amount of fluid going into the bladder making bladder emptying more difficult
2. Manage protein intake - diets rich in protein can increase the risk of BPH. Consider reducing your protein intake if it’s excessive. You can check your recommended intake using a daily protein calculator. Aim to consume approximately 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight/day.
3. Increase vitamin C consumption - research shows some foods with certain micronutrients may reduce the risk of enlarged prostate including diet rich in green vegetables and Vitamin C e.g. broccoli, spinach, brussel sprouts.
