Virginia flavour profile & description
Description: Virginia tobacco has a naturally sweet taste and the pleasantly sweet aroma of caramelized sugar. The tobacco leaves are large, ranging in color from lemon yellow to orange or even mahogany, depending on the stalk position.
History: Virginia tobacco was created by accident in 1839, when a slave in Virginia named Stephen inadvertently fell asleep while overseeing the fires lit in the barns to dry the harvested tobacco. He had entered the barn when the leaves were bright yellow, then recharged the fires so the leaves could continue the drying process until they were their usual brown.
But his falling asleep allowed the fires to flare up, creating a sudden drying heat that fixed the bright yellow color onto the leaf. The bright yellow color was accompanied by the pleasant, sweet smell of caramelized sugar – and a huge success with the French women who had just started smoking at the time. Its popularity continued to grow over the years, making Virginia one of the most common tobaccos in the world today.
Note: In North America, blended cigarettes typically use the three main tobacco types: Virginia, Burley, and Oriental. Popular blended brands include the Philip Morris International brands Marlboro, L&M, and Chesterfield.
Burley flavour profile & description
Description: Burley tobacco provides a balanced, mellow and nutty experience. Cultivated on the foothills of Italian volcano Vesuvius, the tobacco is sun-ripened, shade-cured and bursting with a savory flavor.
History: White Burley tobacco was discovered in 1864, when a man named Mr. Webb began growing Kentucky seed with a form of albinism. The midrib of green Burley tobacco in the fields is still white today, and the light, air-cured tobacco is mainly used for cigarette production. Burley tobacco was introduced in Italy in 1891, where it found ideal growing conditions around the Vesuvius volcano near Naples.
Cavendish flavour profile & description
Description: Cavendish is a type of tobacco resulting from a specific process, usually using Virginia tobacco. Dark, ripe Virginia tobacco leaves are steam-treated and oak-barrel cured, producing a tobacco with a brilliant intensity and rich taste.
History: Several different stories surround the origin of Cavendish, but all of them involve tobacco that was being transported on the ship of Sir Thomas Cavendish in 1585.
One tale says Cavendish infused his personal supply of tobacco with dark rum to prevent it from drying out and getting moldy. He then rolled the wet leaves together, binding them tightly with sail canvas and twine. Much to his surprise, the flavor improved.
The tobacco smoked sweeter, was mellower and had an aromatic fragrance. The process of using double fermentation to create Cavendish tobacco was born.
Another tale says Cavendish was created by accident, when several massive barrels of fire-cured Virginia tobacco got wet while on the ship of Lord Cavendish. When the tobacco shipment arrived after spending weeks in the hot summer weather, the tobacco was black. But it had an absolutely enticing aroma.
Although he was reimbursed for the damage by the insurance company, Lord Cavendish was also able to sell the black tobacco because of its captivating aroma. The tobacco had turned black and highly aromatic due to over-fermentation, which occurred when the water began decomposing the tobacco’s natural sugar without allowing mold to take over. The process has since been reproduced on all types of tobacco to create Cavendish tobacco.
Note: The process only works with fresh water; tobacco dampened by salt water is a total loss.
