This is the first parliamentary election in the Muslim-majority area since Prime Minister Narendra Modi revoked its special status in 2019. Modi's party, the BJP, has not fielded a candidate in the region. Christopher Snedden is a Political Scientist and Author of the book: "Independent Kashmir: An Incomplete Aspiration". He said the reason why the BJP is not fielding a candidate is a "fear of defeat".
