The August 9 attack on the 31-year-old medical professional in Kolkata's RG Kar hospital has ignited protests across the country, with activists and the public decrying the persistent threat of sexual violence faced by women in India, despite the enactment of stricter laws. Doctors have called for Banerjee's resignation, accusing her of mishandling the aftermath. Even after the Supreme Court ordered junior doctors to return to work, they defied the ruling and continued their strike. Banerjee attempted to meet with the protesting doctors, but they refused after the government declined to livestream the discussions, as legal proceedings were still ongoing. While demonstrations in other parts of India have relatively subsided, doctors in West Bengal have been persistent with their rallies and campaigns.
