| Video Discription | The Arizona Supreme Court granted Democratic Attorney General Kris Mayes’ request to delay the enforcement of an archaic 1864 near-total abortion ban in the state. The law would criminalize all abortions, with the only exception being if the pregnant person’s life is at risk. ‘I am grateful that the Arizona Supreme Court has stayed enforcement of the 1864 law and granted our motion to stay the mandate in this case for another 90 days,’ Mayes said in a statement. Mayes’ office said the 1864 law had previously been slated to go into effect on June 27; however, her 90-day stay paired with an additional 45-day stay from a separate court case has now pushed that enforcement date back to September 26. Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has signed a repeal of the law. The issue is that the repeal can only go into effect 90 days after the Arizona legislative session ends, and it is currently still in session. Per NBC News, last year’s legislative session ended on July 31, so depending on when this year’s session ends, the ban might only be enforceable for around a month, if at all.
