Various of flooded streets STORYLINE: Weather officials in Bangladesh said Friday that floodwaters are receding in some areas, after this week's deluge in the eastern region wreaked havoc and left at least 30 people dead. But forecasters warned the flooding would not be over for days. Bangladeshi non-governmental organization BRAC said in a statement that up to three million people remained stranded as fast-moving water inundated vast areas of farmland, destroying livelihoods, homes, and crops. It said many remained without electricity, food or water. Other media reports said up to 4.5 million people have been affected in the delta nation of 170 million people. Dhaka-based Ekhon TV reported Friday that seven more people died in the previous 24 hours. Rasheda Aktar Tumpa, a flood victim in Feni district, said rescue efforts were delayed, and that "no lives would have been lost," if the response was quicker. Earlier, four deaths were reported in raging waters flooding downstream from India, and amid incessant rains in the east.
