| Video Discription | Rufus members Tony Maiden and Bobby Watson were once in a band called High Voltage that included Lalomie Washington, a singer songwriter. After the duo left to form Rufus, Lalomie kept in touch with them. She had been working with Tony on the music for a new song during a writing session with him while his home was being renovated and their surroundings were a mess. They succesfully completed the song and Lalomie sat up trying to come up with lyrics. After a few glasses of wine with midnight fast approaching, Lalomie was inspired to write the lyrics. The next day, she went in to record the demo with Maiden adding a few friends to help out background vocals. When the song was presented to Chaka, she was ecstatic with the demo and kept Lalomie's vocals in the mix, adding the band and her own vocals to finish the song. Maiden explained that Rufus was so successful because they were able to communicate on so many different levels. Lalomie was born August 25, 1941 in Memphis, Tennessee. She started off as a background singer for the likes of Ray Charles and Ike & Tina Turner and tried her hand at writing songs which ended being recorded by Rufus, Chaka Khan, Brothers Johnson and Aretha Franklin. She was finally signed to Parachute Records (part of the Casablanca Records empire) in 1977. Three songs from that LP were released and none charted. A final Parachute single was "Two Sides" was issued in 1978 and also did not chart. Left without a label, she recorded sporadically putting out an EP "Could It Be" in 1983. She also had several 12" single releases throughout the 80's and 90's that were popular in the UK and Europe. The 1996 release of "The Songs" which was also released as "Now Or Never" and "London Love Affair" was not successful outside of Germany where she had a big fan base. Sadly, she succumbed to liver cancer on September 18, 2004 in Los Angeles, California. |
