| Video Discription | Technicians at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans have lifted the core stage of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, which will power the first crewed Artemis II mission. The core stage was placed onto NASA's Multi-Purpose Transportation System, designed to transport SLS components by land and water from manufacturing to testing and launch locations. The stage is now set to be moved onto the Pegasus barge, which will ferry it to Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Standing 212 feet tall, this core stage is NASA's largest ever, featuring two massive propellant tanks that hold over 733,000 gallons of cryogenic fuel to power four RS-25 engines. During launch, it will generate more than 2 million pounds of thrust to propel the Orion spacecraft and a crew of four astronauts toward the Moon. All major SLS core stage structures are built at Michoud, and the Artemis mission aims to land the first woman, person of color, and international astronaut on the Moon. SLS is a key part of NASA’s deep space exploration, supporting Orion, the Gateway lunar station, and next-gen systems for human exploration on the Moon. It's the only rocket capable of sending Orion, astronauts, and cargo to the Moon in a single launch. |
