But underneath the sunny weather and equally upbeat demeanors is a nest of secrets, lies and disturbing thoughts, with each member of the family harboring something the other members aren't privy to. Yet as the family gathers, going about their innocuous morning meal, the pressure slowly builds. It all threatens to come to a head and may shatter the picture of familial contentment -- if a nuclear bomb doesn't get there first. Directed and written by Nick Papaterpou, this bracingly witty short comedy has the gleaming visual brightness of a contemporary American family sitcom, emphasizing the tidy, neat veneer of suburban life. But a densely written, mordantly funny voiceover of the narrative's omniscient narrator tells a different story, of a seething collective mass of family resentments, desires, disappointments, regrets and secrets, all of which prove that ignorance isn't always bliss when it comes to family dynamics. On the surface, not much happens in the film's beginning and middle section, as various family members come down to the kitchen for breakfast, greeting one another with bland but cheerful conversation. However, the comedy comes from the contrast between this placid portrayal of family contentment with the elaborate, dark and often savage inner thoughts of each member. Dad is having an existential crisis; the daughter has some sort of strange prescience; one son can't control his libido. Other secrets are brewing as well, ones that would destabilize everything if they came out in the open. And yet the family persists in sweeping it all under the rug, even when they get the chance to come clean. But as the collective weight of repressing all these secrets increases, the film's brittle bright "reality" becomes increasingly surreal, with developments and interactions taking on a more exaggerated tenor and the pressure ratcheting up the pacing and intensity. Collectively, the cast expertly treads the line between a seemingly normal surface and the slightly crazed demeanor that stuffing one's feelings can lead to. But tamping down the truth at all costs will turn any family unit into a ticking time bomb -- and in this case, it's both an emotional and literal one. Well-written, witty and memorable, THE ANDERSON FAMILY BREAKFAST clearly goes for exaggeration at its end, but the outrageousness is connected to a relatable emotional truth. Pretending to be okay or perfect when things are not is a shortcut to implosion, both personally and as a unit. You never know when something seemingly insignificant or small can set off a contagion -- one that blows up with the force of a thousand unspoken thoughts and feelings finally unloading. |
