When the dental office called for help, I stepped in to rescue the patch and restore the wall to its former glory. The Restoration Process Scraping and Smoothing: I began by lightly scraping the patch (using the side of my drywall knife) to eliminate any high points and create a smoother surface for further work. Fiberglass Tape Reinforcement: To ensure the patch's durability, I applied fiberglass tape (or mesh tape) along the seam, reinforcing the area and preventing cracks from forming. Base Coat Application: Using 5-minute joint compound (or drywall mud or hot mud), I applied a thin base coat (bed coat) to the patch, feathering the edges to blend seamlessly with the surrounding wall. [Note: Never apply regular drywall mud on mesh tape, they do not like each other!] Final Coat and Smoothing: Once the base coat dried, I applied a regular drywall mud (joint compound) as a skim coat (final coat), carefully feathering the edges to create a smooth illusion. Sanding Perfection: After allowing the final coat to dry, I returned to the dental office to sand the repaired area, ensuring a flawless finish. A Lesson Learned While I applaud the gentleman's courage in attempting the drywall repair, it's crucial to remember the importance of smoothing the patch after each layer of drywall mud is applied.
