He has played some iconic roles in the film Sholay where he portrayed the role of Rahim chacha and got popular for his one dialogue. He also played special cameo roles in Aamir khan's Lagaan and Amol Palekar's Paheli. He performed in many plays before the Partition. At the time of the Partition, he was also involved with a theatre group called Indian People’s Theatre Association. Hangal was also known for being critical of Bal thackeray.
