| Video Discription | Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Group by Age in Excel using a VLOOKUP. Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In this video, we will be discussing how to group ages in Excel using VLOOKUP. As data analysts, we often come across large amounts of data that need to be analyzed. One of the most efficient ways to do this is by using pivot tables. However, in this video, we will be focusing on a specific problem posed by one of our viewers, Steve. Steve has a column of race results with an "Age" category that he wants to group into specific age ranges such as 0-9, 10-19, and so on. To do this, we will be creating a table with the various age categories and their corresponding lowest values. Then, we will use a different version of VLOOKUP, one that has a comma true at the end. This version allows us to find the value just lower than the one we are looking for, instead of an exact match. As we fill in the table, you will see that the categories are automatically filled in using the VLOOKUP function. Next, Steve wanted to sort the data by category and age. This can easily be done by going to Data, Sort, and selecting "Sort by Category." We can then add a new level and sort by category and time to see the fastest times for each age group. It's important to note that for this method to work, the table must be sorted from lowest to highest. This is because we are using the range version of VLOOKUP, which does not require an exact match.
