Taliban fighters have been keen to show off some of the equipment and weapons left behind by US forces, while pointing out that they now control more of Afghanistan than they did 20 years ago when the military intervention started. At the White House President Biden delivered a detailed defence of his decision to order the US withdrawal. Despite criticism from many quarters he said the evacuation efforts had been an “extraordinary success” and insisted he'd been faced with a stark choice, between “leaving or escalating”.
