| Video Discription | Pet loss is such a difficult thing to go through. Often we do it alone, even if we are surrounded by friends and family, because we can't say how we are REALLY feeling due to fear of being ridiculed or judged. I am a grief counsellor for pet owners and a pet owner. I really get the pain of losing a pet on a personal and professional level. What you will learn from this video: You will discover this is an incredibly sad and difficult time, exactly the same, if not worse for some people, than when a person passes away. You will grieve like you do for a person and this is totally normal. The "hidden grief" as I call it, is the most challenging part of grief for a pet or a person. It's invisible to others but very real to you. What makes it harder for pet owners is that we can't share as openly or freely about our pet passing away due to being ridiculed or misunderstood. This means we grieve alone often. The tricky thing about this is that grief needs to be expressed or it comes out in other unhealthy ways. I like to say it comes out sideways. Julia Samuel is a grief expert and someone I look up to. She says the main thing people need when grieving is support. She also has a beautiful quote that says, "When love dies it is love that heals." Ways to express grief: be kind to yourself. Find out what this means for you. Looking at nature or going for a walk in the grass with no shoes on is soothing. Just the simple things can help when you are overwhelmed. I also talk about cushions of grief, a little phrase I came up with. This gives you the idea of what you need in grief, i.e. softness to cushion the pain. I want to let you know you are not alone. There are many of us who have been through what you are going through and we get you! Grief needs to be expressed and it's healthy to express it through tears or however else you are expressing it at the moment, even though it hurts like hell!
