| Video Discription | The A1134 is Cambridge's ring road and is a little under 10 miles long (16km). In the middle of the 20th century, there were proposals to build new routes and upgrade several existing roads in the outskirts of Cambridge to help ease the traffic flow through the small historic city centre streets. Some of these did eventually happen, such as the Elizabeth Way bridge over the river, however others never came to pass. At one stage there was to be a series of roads through what is now the West Cambridge Site connecting Trumpington Road to Histon Road, and at times there has been a proposal for a new bridge over the River Cam connecting Wadloes Road to Cam Causeway. This would have more or less created two clear ring roads - and inner and an outer ring road. With the completion of the A14 bypass (then the A45), most of the proposals seem to have been dropped. The ring road in its current state was formed partially from barely upgraded existing city streets with some newly built sections. As it stands, the ring road has two clear halves. In the south and east, the ring road is some 2 miles from the city centre. In the west the ring road gets as close as 500 yards from Great St. Mary's church. Joining the two halves, the ring road shares the busy radial routes of Newmarket Road and Trumpington Road - which causes much congestion. This video shows an eastbound journey along the A1134 Newmarket Road, from the roundabout with Elizabeth Way and East Road, to the roundabout with Barnwell Road near Cambridge Airport.
