Egg Chataka is a vibrant and flavorful Indian street food that's surprisingly easy to make at home. This recipe combines perfectly cooked eggs with a tangy and spicy masala for a delightful snack or appetizer.
Ingredients:
4 Eggs
1/2 tablespoon Vegetable Oil
1/2 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
1 teaspoon Red Chili Powder
1 1/2 teaspoons Cumin Powder (plus extra for sprinkling)
1 finely chopped Green Chili
Salt to taste
Green Chutney (to your preference)
3-4 tablespoons finely chopped Onion
3-4 tablespoons finely chopped Tomato
3-4 tablespoons grated Processed Cheese (optional)
Sev (thin fried gram noodles)
Pomegranate Pearls (optional)
Freshly chopped Coriander Leaves (for garnish)
Instructions:
Boil the Eggs: Start by placing the eggs in a saucepan and covering them with water. Bring the water to a boil, then remove from heat and let the eggs sit for 10 minutes. Drain the hot water and run cold water over the eggs to cool them down. Once cool, peel the eggs and cut them in half.
Prepare the Masala: Heat oil in a non-stick pan. Add red chili powder, turmeric powder, cumin powder (1 1/2 teaspoons), and chopped green chili. Saute for a few seconds until fragrant.
Cook the Eggs: Add the halved eggs to the pan with the masala. Season with salt and mix well. Gently cook the eggs for 1-2 minutes on each side, allowing them to absorb the flavors.
Assemble the Chataka: Place the cooked eggs on a serving plate. Dollop green chutney on each egg half. Top with chopped onion, tomato, grated cheese (if using), and a sprinkle of cumin powder.
Garnish and Serve: Finish your Egg Chataka with a generous helping of sev, pomegranate pearls (for a pop of color), and freshly chopped coriander leaves. Serve immediately and enjoy the burst of flavors!
Tips:
Adjust the amount of chili powder to your spice preference.
You can substitute sev with chopped peanuts or crushed potato chips for a different texture.
For a richer flavor, use ghee instead of vegetable oil.
Feel free to add chopped fresh cilantro to the masala for an extra layer of taste.
This recipe is easily doubled or tripled to serve a crowd.
